Every continent in the world has a desert biome except Europe. Even Antarctica has a desert biome, there are areas called cold deserts in Antarctica.-- When we think of deserts we think of sand and heat, however that's not exactly how all of them are. A desert gets its name by the small amount of vegetation that grows there. That is why it is possible to have deserts in antarctica. On the other hand, some deserts are really hot in the day, then the temperature drops greatly at night.
Another thing that characterizes a desert is a place that gets less than 10 inches of rain a year. Some of the driest deserts receive about 1 centimeter of rain every 5 to 20 years--a great place to go if you hate rain. Since it hardly rains, there isn't a very large amount of water in the desert so the animals and plants have to store a lot of the water they need to survive. Some plants in the desert, such as cacti and the jumping cholla, store basically all their water in their stem, while the animals there, small animals, rodents, the thorny devil, and reptiles, store it somewhere in their body or get it from the food they eat.

Deserts cover about 20% of the earth's surface. The Sahara desert is the biggest desert in the world, with a 300 million square mile area of coverage. The Sahara is located in the Northern part of Africa, covering land in countries like Egypt, Sudan, Niger, Mali, and more.
